An extract from a critical review:
One of the most evident characteristics of the work of Piera Luisolo is the grouping of heterogeneous elements. Iconographically it is as if the work described a place, an almost secret corner hiding sedimented chips of different worlds, which seem to have in common only a certain air of having lived and of being willing to form surprising combinations (according to the still life genre when it is not reduced to a mere exercise in style and in a manner not unlike the intimate atmosphere of a bourgeois wunderkammer). On a operative plane, the incoherence involves both the traditional graphic and pictorial techniques (water colour, tempera, inks, crayon and pastels, glues...) and experimentation with materials (wallpaper, manuscript and printed pages, musical scores, particularly decorative fabrics, wires, fragments of nature...), that meet and overlay in Piera’s works, affirming an undeniable specificness. No less significant, however, is the fact that such variety is led back to a unitary visual effect. The solidarity reached, not without doubts and experiments, is painting: on the fragile balance of painting a continuum of light/space, the atmosphere of everyday feelings, the facts and the half-truths in the work. ...Within the borders of the exquisitely pictorial illusion, note the lustre and the crackled effect of the Arabic glue washed across the painting. How the watercolour draws in, contrasting the extreme luminisity of the support; so that the more or less veiled density of the glue exaggerates the chromatic intensity of the pigments, gaining thickness (like the black and yellow painted hornet that stands out so from the watercolour petals of a flower or the red of a rose that becomes almost brazen). Certainly if the effort to describe prevailed, we could recall the rules of the trompe-l'oeil genre; but this is different; in fact the discontinuity on the perceptive plane leads back to the threshold of the compactness of the image, based on the conviction that sentiment guides the eye of the artist and conditions every further perception of the figure. Which in fact belongs to the complex dimension of trompe-l’esprit rather than that of a simple visual trick. Piera Luisolo knows that painting is part of loving desire, which does not exclude passing through the physical eye.
